The basics, explained

What counts as income, and what counts as an expense?

Getting this right is most of the job. Submit&GO helps you sort every transaction into one of the two — here is the plain-English version.

Income

Money your business earns from what it does.

Counts as income
  • Sales of goods and services
  • Rent from a property you let out
  • Income from online platforms and marketplaces
  • Commission, tips and other business income
  • …and many more*
Doesn't count
  • Loans, and money you put in yourself
  • Transfers between your own accounts
  • VAT you collect for HMRC (if VAT-registered)

Expenses

Costs you pay only to run the business — these reduce your tax bill.

Allowable expenses
  • Stock, materials and tools
  • Business travel and fuel
  • Phone, internet and software
  • Insurance, accountancy and office costs
  • Repairs and running costs of a let property
  • …and many more*
Not allowable
  • Personal and private spending
  • Entertaining clients
  • Fines and penalties

* This is a general guide, not tax advice. What counts as income or an allowable expense depends on your circumstances — for anything specific, please consult your accountant. Larger items such as equipment and vans are usually claimed through capital allowances, and your accountant can review your entries directly in your workspace.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s move toward digital record keeping and digital tax submissions.

Who is Submit&GO designed for?

Submit&GO is designed for businesses, landlords, self-employed individuals, accountants and tax agents.

Do I need other software alongside Submit&GO?

No. Submit&GO is where you keep your records — invoices, expenses, bank feed, ledger and reports — in one place.

Can accountants and agents use Submit&GO?

Yes. Accountants manage all their clients from one agent workspace. HMRC submissions for clients are coming soon.

What records do I need to prepare?

You should prepare invoices, receipts, bank transactions and any relevant records needed for the submission.

Can I submit VAT returns to HMRC?

MTD for VAT is coming soon. We will confirm on this page as soon as each HMRC service is live in production.

Is my bank connection safe?

Bank feeds come through a regulated Open Banking provider. Access is read-only — Submit&GO can never move money.

Can my accountant work in my account?

Yes. Your accountant sends an access request from their agent workspace and you approve it in your account. They then see your records alongside their other clients.

Do I need a limited company?

No. Submit&GO works for limited companies, sole traders, partnerships, landlords and CIS contractors.
